Can't open itunes or finder

When ever I click on the itunes or finder icons, I get this error message: "The itunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have written permission for this file". I read somewhere that for itunes it may have gotten stuck as a read only file and you can fix this by going to my documents --> music --> itunes --> properties --> unselect "read only". But when I click on "my documents" it tells me that I have to open it with "finder", and "finder" gives me the same error message as itunes. Is there any way to fix these problems? Thanks!

Oh shit, I've dealt with this on some school computers. Its a nice permissions error. One thing you can do is copy the single library file onto a flash drive, and then delete it from the computer. Then open itunes. This will create a new library where you can go into you finder (hd/user/music/itunes) and copy all of the categorized songs and so forth back into iTunes.

EDIT: and relating to the finder, what the hell did you do to your poor computer? Ok, so go into finder/applications/utilites and open disk utility, click on your hd, should be at the top left of the slide menu. And on the lower right click repair permissions. If this doesnt work, which is might not, then grab your install disc and run off of it by inserting it, and restarting while holding down control c. When it finally loads up, close the install window and instead go to the top where it says utilities, and repeat the previous. This should only take about 11-20 minutes on most newer macs, and slightly above 30 on older macs. Good Luck.

I'm not sure what the .ltl file is, but I'd repair permissions using Disk Utility (first time I've suggested that in _years_!). Id also check to make sure you have write privileges for your iTunes library (usually in ~/Music). You can do so by selecting the iTunes library folder and pressing Command i

You'll probably have to click the lock and type in your password to authenticate, if it needs to be changed. And be sure to change permissions on everything inside the folder too (via the "gear" dropdown).
