Can't read system.log

I just recently re-installed Tiger. I run as a non-administrator on my computer, and I suddenly found that I don't have permission to read system.log. I've run verify and repair permissions in Disk Utility, and, though there are plenty of special permissions, no permissions are changed. I don't think re-installing is the whole of the problem, because I could read system.log for a little while.

While I'm on the topic of logs, I also get an error on login that my login has not been recorded, because my UID is too large. I guess this is innocuous, but I'm curious why it occurs, since other Mac users I know don't get this message.
