Can't reset password through utilities!

Ok so I inserted the Mac OS X install disc. Went through utilities --> reset password. Problem is when I tried to save the new password it gave me this prompt:
"The password you entered has not been saved for the user System Administrator(root). You may not have permission to edit this disk or a general failure has occurred."
can someone help?

It's a 13" MacBook with leopard...
 
You must Boot (to the disk) with the version of OS X you have. There right before the install happens you can find the option to reset the password. This Apple Document will explain how to reset the password.
