Please help!

I need Java 1.6 on my Mac OS 10.5.8 to run an applet (for a source catalog from the Chandra X-ray Observatory). Whenever I try to run the Java application, I get an error message that the applied failed and if I check in my Java console, I see that Java 1.5 was the Java version accessed. However, Java 1.6 is indeed installed on my Mac. In the Java preferences window, I dragged Java 1.6 to the top of my list of Javas (there are a couple Java 1.5 versions enabled below it . . . . I have also tried disabling all other versions besides Java 1.6 with no luck either). Java and Javascript are enabled on Firefox (Firefox version 3.6.13), pop-up windows are disabled and I cleared my cache. When I type java -version on the command line it tells me I'm running Java 1.6. However, when I check this website (http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp) I'm told I'm running Java 1.5. I have no Java updates in my Mac Software Updates. I have found some evidence in searching online that this is a known bug, but I don't understand the explanations on how to fix it. If anyone can help me, please respond!!!!! The help staff for the software I'm trying to download are baffled by my problems as well :(
