can't upgrade iBook 500 MhZ to 10.2.8

I have an iBook 500 MzH that was running 10.4.3 plus OS 9.2.2. I wiped it to get it ready to sell to someone else, but everything back on, and it worked fine for three weeks! Then died.

I wiped drive three times, zeroing out all data. Ran Disk Warrior and Tech Tool. Ran the Apple Hardware diagnostic CD specifically for this iBook. Everything came back that it was fine fine fine.

Was able to load 9.2.1 back on machine, no problem. Was able to load 10.2.1, no problem. Upgraded everything via software update except the combined update to get it to 10.2.8! Sits there churning and churning, but never loads. Tried downloading the installer instead. Won't do it.

Tried upgrading to 10.2.6 from disk, won't do it.

Has anyone ever seen this behavior before? I am wondering if it is the hard drive.

Was able to boot to single user mode and run fsck. Said everything fine. booted into verbose mode and nothing looked odd. booted to open firmware mode and reset the NVRAM and all ports, etc.

No help whatsoever.

Any and all help is appreciated.

When you say it "won't do it," what exactly is happening? Does it give you any error messages? Does it just hang? If it just hangs, where exactly does it hang?

No error messages, if I go thru Software update it just sits and spins and spins next to the update, and never finishes. If I try to download the update image, it again just sits and spins as if it's doing it, but it never does.

If I try from the 10.2.6 disk (booted from the disk), the blue progress bar gets about 1/5 way thru and just hangs there. I can't remember offhand what it is sitting on, and wil try it again and see....

I was able to download the 10.2.8 image on my other mac, but have not ported it over to the iBook yet to try it.

Don't go through software update, download the combo updaters. While installing/updating, open the log window (you'll find it in the menus somewhere) and look at possible errors. I'd go directly from 10.2.1 to 10.2.8, btw.

I have not looked at the logs, but I tried to download the combo updater to the iBook, and it just sits and spins, never downloads. I have it on another mac, so will try porting it over and see if it will let me install.

Thanks for tip on the logs though, never think to do that....
