Cant upgrade mac os 9 to 9.1 - help

The 9.1 .smi file is the image file that encloses the 9.1 updater. If you are booted to OS 9, just double click on the file, and it should open the image, so you may need to double-click on THAT to begin the update.
Your firmware question depends on which Mac you have. Some do not have firmware updates at all, and do not need any.
You can help by giving some information about your Mac.
What model is it (iMac, iBook, eMac, PowerBook, PowerMac)
It will also help if you can tell us what the processor speed is. If you are not sure, it will usually be on the serial number label, which might be on the bottom on an iMac, or on the back (near the ports) on a PowerMac.
Come back with that information, or come back anyway - if you can't decide what you have, so just describe what your Mac looks like - that will help, too... :D
