Caring Battery and Charging

Dear all,

I'm a newbie in mac. i recently bought a new macbook. But i'm kind of dissapointed because the battery can't be detach right out of it.

Usually in other laptop (hp acer dell etc), if i want to use it for a long time, i'll detach the battery and use power adapter, in order to maintain the battery lifetime.

So, did i shorten the battery lifetime span if i often use the battery with power adapter plugged in, or i use the macbook while the charger keep charging till full?

Thanks :)

It won't harm the battery as long as you don't do this 100% of the time -- you need to occasionally disconnect the computer from the power adapter and use the battery a little. While it is claimed that this is not necessary with Lithium-polymer batteries, it's not a bad idea to use the battery every once in a blue moon.

I think these two pages would answer most of your battery concerns.

The built-in battery in the new 13-, 15-, and 17-inch MacBook Pro is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at up to 1000 full charge and discharge cycles.

As a comparison, the previous models (with removable battery) had its cycle count around 300 to reach that 80 %, so you should be getting much longer life of the battery. 1000 cycle counts (one cycle being a total of 100 % battery used and recharged, so going 5 times from 100 % to 80 % = 1 cycle) should in a normal use last for a few years easily.

The ideal is still to use it with the battery at least sometimes, of it not an option, discharge and recharge the battery at least once a month.

I see. Thanks. Usually, i'm working while keep it fully charged and disconnect the power adapter, until it reach about 5%. And repeat if necessary. So maybe i should stay like thins.

Thanks. Is that what it's called Calibrating battery that i heard so much about macbook?
