CD-Burner not Working !!!

Hello,

My CD-Drive ( Optical Drive) is not working anymore.
It Won't:
When a Disc is in there the computer does'nt reconize it at all.
Eject unless I do it manualy.(Papper Clip)
System Profiler does not reconize it.
iTunes gives me the error message ( Disk Burner or Software not found )
I have logged on to different users same outcome.
I have opened the tower and disconected and reconected the drive still nothing.

The one thing I did do was move the iTunes Muisc folder to another Hard Drive.
But just on my Log-in.

I put the folder back and still nothing.

But How can the drive just go bad ?
I had no problems with it at all.

I did have this strange thing happen to my computer prior to this.
I didn't mention it because it's very involed and I don't understand
half of what I did to get it back going.
I can say this I used my start up disk to fix the computer so the drive
was working then .
Now nothing.

Are There any test I can run to ensure that is in fact Bad ?

Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one ?
I just don't wan't to buy a new Burner and still have the same problem.

A drive is just a mechanical device. They can go bad at anytime without warning.

Your drive doesn't recognize a disc, won't boot from a disc.
