I have used Shapeshifter for years, and it has been a good little interface changing app. However, it can be a bit of a resource hog if you don't have much RAM (I only have 512Mb on my Mac Mini). After a while I found a nice white theme called Iridium that can be installed without Shapeshifter (though you don't have the option of switching between themes whenever you want this way), which released the memory Shapeshifter would have otherwise been using.
Also of note: Apple will ignore any error report that gets sent to them if you are using the Application Enhancer system that Shapeshifter's parent company Unsanity uses to enable all their various modifications to the system (installed as part of Shapeshifter). However, usually their software is pretty good and doesn't cause any problems in my experience.
