change the volume of startup chime

is there a way i can mute or better yet just lower the volume of the startup chime. i've tried the Psst! program but it doesn't work for me.i have os 10.4.2 on a mac mini.

there is a keyboard mute button though at shut down but you have to mute your os all the time.just not to hear the chime at start up.i've tried to search the forums but can't find any.maybe i wasn't lookin hard enough.many thanks in advance.

Not to nitpick, but orrange27 mentioned that Psst! was used but it didn't work.

On the simple tip, if you mute your system before shutting down, there should be no chime the next time you start up.
