Cherry OS in 3 Days

Do you think they will make their Nov 25 (Thanksgiving in USA) deadline? Seems odd to launch it on a holiday.

Only time will tell. I'm expecting a timely release with lackluster performance. Maybe some obfuscation of the code to detatch it from whomever they stole it from. I'd love to be surprised, though.

These CherryOS guys aren't from the US, so I'm sure November 25th is just another day to them. Kind of like 4th of July in England.

They won't come through on the release. CherryOS was by a Hawiian company with a somewhat lackluster video server application, and was intended only as a traffic-test for their video-streaming software. The site was designed to fool people into visiting and watching the demonstration videos (hence the reason the site had 6 video clips demonstrating use, but not a single bit of information otherwise).

In review, the CherryOS site had falsified quotes from fake business names, had definitely used modified PearPC code to create their video clips, and their video product site has even quoted the CherryOS event as a test of their software (which is pretty stupid, considering their software crashed miserably once the Mac/Slash crowds started to converge on it).

I think we won't see much. Maybe they'll even try to pull the same thing off over again? Probably will set a new release date and have a store ready, so now you can actually give them _money_ to get nothing...

But, me too, I would love to be surprised. Just imagine: Mac OS X running at insanely great speed on X86 hardware... Would give Steve Jobs quite a bit to think about. Then open source the thing and spread it as wide as possible before Apple can react with lawyers... Maybe _then_ we'd finally see Apple release Mac OS X and iLife for X86 (or at least X86-64). Well. One can dream. ;) But again: I think it'll be a non-show, really. And please: Do _not_ give these guys any money until you had the chance to try the actual software...

Um. are you forgetting? You still need to have windows to run the app, which cancels any stability you might have.

I think we may also be forgetting the fact that if the greater majority of Apple's hardware sales were lost due to X on Windows hardware, Apple would probably have to close up shop.

They updated their site:

MXS will provide a free trial download of the CherryOS software, in addition to the purchase download in early 2005

Good riddance. We'll never see it. These guys don't have a product to deliver, yet continue to tease the public and pat themselves on the back with rave reviews written by themselves and ridiculous performance claims.

At least Longhorn is an actual product.

So, is them being from a different country a decent reason for them releasing CherryOS on a holiday?

Surely if they did research, and learned that the US is the best market, they'd want to favour the US.

I tell ya, this must be the best vaporware campaign I've seen in a while. Wether or not this software actually makes it out to market, I think this company needs to be tarred and feathered. If they were not ready to provide the product back in October when they said it was ready for immediate download, they are full of it to say they now they are extending their beta testing untill Q1 of '05. What a crock. Can't wait to see a demo of this...

Whats worse is that they've managed to abuse an open-source, community driven project as a way to make some easy cash.

Your totally right. But if Apple has its own software it to should also be generating a stable income from software sales incase such an event should occure.

I think you're missing one little thing. it clearly states in the OS X license agreement that it is illegal to install or run it on anything but an apple computer. so it would still not be legal to do what they say is possible. i can't see a lot of people using lower quality hardware, without drivers, ILLEGALLY just to save a few hundred dollars..

thank you. good to see someone knows whats up. apple has nothing to worry about. most people desire the apple hardware far more than the os itself anyway.

think about it though.. pretty much every switcher was probably enticed by the hardware look and feel. osx on a pc would be like a really crappy car with a great engine.

i'd say it'd be like a ferrari/porsche/mercedes/jaguar BODY (the bit you see [on screen]) with datsun engine, driveline, chassis, wheels and brakes.

sure, it LOOKS nice. but try and actually do something with it.

I'm probably the exception - I was convinced by the software.

The overall platform is a major draw - the standardized hardware, the excellent styling (the PM G5 definitely wouldn't have been as big a draw as the PM G4, style-wise, but whatever), but if the boxes were running a (hopefully more stable) version of OS 9, there's no chance I would have switched. If they were running on a PC, given a few things (like it actually worked, apps were available, etc), I'd have switched as well, and I suspect so would a much larger number of people.

However, OS X on an emulator on a PC would stink, overall, as much of us know from having to use Virtual PC, but would be really cool to play with, especially for those PC users that had scoffed at Macs (and haven't touched one since OS 8.6), but might if they get a taste of OS Xey goodness.
