Circuit City: Trustworthy and Competent to Install RAM?

Amie

Mac Convert for Life
I bought a 1GB RAM chip from Crucial.com and I'm taking my iBook G4 and RAM to Circuit City to have them install it for a small fee. I don't want to go to places like CompUSA because you have to drop your computer off (for several hours or possibly even overnight, depending on how busy they are that day) and leave it with strangers. *shudder* I could never do that with my baby. Er ... I mean my computer. Found out that Circuit City does it right in front of you (they have a setup in the middle of the store), takes about 10 minutes. Easy in, easy out. And, best of all, my computer never leaves my sight.

However, that said, I've never gone to Circuit City for any type of service work and I honestly don't know squat about their tech team and/or competency. Does anyone here have any opinions on this?

It depends if they have a Mac person or not. As long as they know the process, it will be extremely difficult for them to scratch/dent your iBook - they don't even have to remove any exterior screws.

Yeah, I went in person and spoke with the manager. He said it's not a problem and they have Mac people there.

Well, be sure to tell us how your experience was and how your 'book feels with quadruple the memory!

I just got the two 512 RAM chips i bought from macsales.com - after i install them on my Dual 1.25 G4 Powermac, i will have a total of 1792 MB.

Leopard already runs much "snappier" than Tiger did on this machine - with the RAM upgrade it will FLY!

Oh, don't worry, I will. In fact, I'll probably spend a good couple weeks just rubbing it in and gloating. :D

Too late now ('cause I already ordered it and it's in the mail), but I'm just wondering ... Was it stupid to buy a 1GB RAM chip for my 4-year-old iBook G4? I take really good care of it, and it's in top-notch shape, but still ... was that a silly thing to do? :(

I know some people would say, skip the RAM upgrade and just buy a new computer in a couple years, but I LIKE my iBook! (And, I'm hoping it will last me a while yet.)

What do you guys think?

I think you didn't need to post this question twice... :)

You will not regret the extra stability, and noticeable speed up, especially if you want to use more than a couple of apps at the same time.
I guess you spent $100, which is much less than you might pay if you ever need a repair on your iBook.... So, a reasonable upgrade, for sure.
You will be OK, until your battery begins to die (they don't last forever, you know), or you find something new for your Mac that requires that new Intel processor.

I was hoping no one would notice that. LOL (Yeah, I figured since this thread was about Circuit City's abilities, and my new question was probably a thread in its own, I figured it'd be best to start a separate one.)

OK, good. I feel better now about the RAM decision.

You mentioned "until my battery starts to die..." But when that happens, can't I just get a replacement battery? That's no big deal, right? Doesn't mean it's the end of life for the computer.

true, not end of life, but batteries are not cheap. if you still have the original battery, it's only a matter of time. After 3 to 4 years, don't think too hard about replacing that battery.

Actually, I was lucky. My battery was one of the one's recalled by Apple after I'd had my computer for about a year. So, they sent me a free, new battery. :D

Best I recall, iBook batteries aren't so expensive. I think they run around 80 bucks, if memory serves me correctly. Which is cheaper than the RAM I just bought. LOL
