Classic gives extraordinarily loud error beeps

I'm running 10.04 alongside 9.2.1 on a dual G4 with 384 mB of ram. Whenever Classic gives an error beep, it is very loud and distorted. Can't imagine what's wrong. I restarted in 9 to bring down the volume, but it makes little difference. Any clues?

That's just Simple Beep, the most annoying sound known to man. Have you tried changing it in the cp from classic?

Yeah, I've tried rebooting to 9 and changing it, but to no avail. I don't know, I think the Classic stuff just needs some debugging.
