Greetings all,
AlBook, 1ghz, 500 Mb, came with 10.2.7, I upgraded to 10.2.8, then I upgraded to 10.3, and finally, upgraded to 10.3.1.
I am having tons of application unexpectedly quitting, and daily kernel panics. I do the normal stuff with cocktail; permissions, cron scripts etc...nothing helps.
I want to clean install 10.3 but, when I boot to the cd and try, it tells me that I can't install on this hard drive because a newer OS is installed.
HOW CAN I DO THIS??

Thanks for your help.

When the installer is running (booted from the CD) under file I think, one of the menu options anyway, is "Disk utility" choose that and Disk Utility will startup. Select the disk you want to install 10.3 on and erase it. Once that is done, quit disk utility and that will take you back to the installer, you can now install 10.3 becuase you have effectively erased 10.3.1 and are working with a blank HD. Make sense?

Thanks, yes, beautiful sense. But I was hoping to be able to keep the drives content intact and just clean install the OS. The way we could w/OS9. Maybe this just won't work with OS X.

Ok, I think this is the deal.
My 10.3 disks are upgrade disks from Apple, $19.95 because ALbook was purchased close to the 10.3 release..upgrade disks don't allow an archive and install (clean ala OS9).
Now I am wondering if I will be able to erase the disk (thanks Mr. President) and install 10.3 without a version of Jaguar on it.??

I had the same $20 panther deal from buying my mom and iMac and they were full install disks, not specific upgrade disks. I don't think you should have any problems. Yeah unfortunately you cannot just reinstall the OS, or rather archive and install in reverse. All i could recommend is backup your home drive before hand.

install OS9, if you have not already. boot into OS9 and delete your OSX System folder. then install 10.3 from CD. this will now install a new System and keep your Applications and preferences.

Good luck

If you're prepared to just start over with this system (any important files backed up) then boot with the restore CD (or DVD) that came with the PB, and do a full restore, including erasing the drive, When complete, do an immediate upgrade (with the simpole upgrade option) with the 10.3 set, and continue on with 10.3.1 and whatever other updates are avail. recommend no external devices attached while you do this (except for power, of course) That will be the smoothest way back, and you still have all the software installed that came with the system. :)
