Cleaner 6 vs. iTunes

I have been using Cleaner to process AIFs into MP3s, but after being frustrated with how slow it is, I went ahead and used iTunes instead for a batch.

I am here to tell you that iTunes absolutely crushes Cleaner in speed. And as far as I can tell, the quality is just as good and the file sizes are identical.

details:
5 source AIFs, each one minute in length.
Cleaner took 2:45 to process at 160 kb
iTunes took :35 to process at 160 kb

What is up with this? Discreet claims dual processor support in Cleaner 6 (used for this test), but I sure didn't see it. Any thoughts?

Machine is DP 1 gig (original model), 1 gig ram

I thought cleaner was for video. I've never thought of it as an audio app.

On the bright side it did wonders for some video of mine. :)

Cleaner is a multi-purpose media processor, including video, audio and even still images.

It does great quality processing, but it's always been slow. As for video, Apple's built-in MP4 encoding crushes Cleaner in speed, but is not as controllable.

Supporting multiple processors is easy. Writing code for the vector processing unit requires more work. Could Cleaner not be optimized for the Altivec?
