"Colored Spinning Ball" Won't Go Away On Desktop - Help!

I have an eMac and get the "colored spinning ball" (not sure of technical term) each time I open my account. I can't see or open anything on my desktop, open Finder or log out of my account (without shutting computer off). Tried creating a new account but same thing happened as well as to my son's & daughter's accounts. Apple's 800 # wouldn't help without charging lots of $ - has anyone had this happen - any suggestions to fix?

try and boot from your install disk
put it in the dvd / cd drive and hold down C while it boots up
See if the same thing happens.
You may need to re-install the system.
I don't remember if there are any disk tools on the install disks, but if so try them to diagnose the problem

I had a similar problem and relaunching the finder stopped it.

I seem to remember some reports on another forum (can't find them!) about a routine that repeats every 35 seconds and, if you hit the return, these periods are stored and have to "time out". Not much help really but iDisk comes to mind - could be wrong though.
