computer freezes in itunes or in safari

For the past couple of weeks we have had a problem with itunes causing the computer (an iMac running OS X 10.5.5) to freeze and we can't even do a forced quit, but must turn off the machine manually. This seems to happen specifically when we are in the itunes store, not just working with the playlist.

The computer has also frozen when in safari - the last time when we were trying to copy a page into Word.

We thought it might be a wireless connectivity problem, but I have switched to an ethernet connection and still have the same problem happening.
 
Run some software maintenance on that Mac. Download either the free Onyx or Yasu and run all the cleaning routines. Let the program immediately reboot your Mac but then once it reboots manually reboot the Mac again to rebuild the startup/shutdown cache.

Running maintenance on a Mac about once every two months is a smart way of keeping your Mac running almost like new.
