Computer will not change startup disks

I can't start up from a CD or change to another start up disk. It just keeps starting from the same disk. OS X 10.4.5. Any ideas?

How are you trying to do that? Not much info in your msg.

Can you choose another volume in your Startup Disk prefpane? Does
that work?

When trying to boot from a cd, hold down the C button after the stratup chime, and keep it held until it gets to the grey screen with Apple logo.

Also, if you hold down the Option key after the startup chime, it'll find & display a list of all bootable systems on your hard drive, cd drive, and external firewire drives.

Edit: Oops...typo. recommended the d button ^_^'

Sorry about the lack of info...

I have tried changing the startup disk in the control panel, holding the C key using the tiger DVD, using the OS X install button on the Tiger DVD (it asks me for admin password and I give it) then hit restart, holding the option key, shutting down and then restarting, shutting down then restarting holding the C key, forcing the computer to shut down using the power key then starting up, forcing the computer to shut down using the power key then restarting holding the C key.

When I hold the C key the computer ejects the DVD before starting.

No matter what I do it just jumps to the desktop and uses my original startup disk.

I have un-installed my virus software and shut off all programs that were set to startup at login.

NOW.... any ide3as (the three is silent, great name!!!)

It might be helpful to post some details about your Mac (model, processor, ram, etc)

(and thanks for the compliment ^_^, btw)

Thanks Bob..Yes it does. I have used it before. OK More details: It is a 1.8Ghz G5 with 3 gigs RAM. The DVD is a LightScribe TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-W162L (Bob) ;) I am using OS X 10.4.5. I have not installed anything new or changed anything. HMMMM...I had to think a minute about what I was trying to do when all this started. I have also been working on my mom's computer for the last couple of days. Oh yes.. I am trying to install OS X on an external firewire drive. I have done this successfully before. That is what started this. I was trying to start up from the install DVD and this happened. Very frustrating. I pulled my current back-up drive from the firewire enclosure, replaced it with the new drive. I have successfully formatted the drive. It is just sitting there waiting for the software. Thanks again for your attempts to help. I'll check back, Robert

Hi there!
Yesterday I did three things:
I converted a Windows user to Mac
I sacrificed a goat to the Mac gods
I successfully restarted my Mac with the Tiger Install DVD
Apparently the first two things had some effect because I didn't change anything else. Thank you for conversing with me while my Mac healed itself.
Regards,
Robert
