Assuming you're running OS 10.4.x check the energy saving preference pane which is available under the blue apple in your menu bar and System Preferences.

certainly on my mac, iPhoto just being open will interrupt the sleep process. also, if iTunes or DVD player is playing, sleep will be ignored.
