configd cpu usage

Disclaimer: I am the paranoid type when it comes to keeping things running smoothly.

A few days ago while looking at the activity monitor, I noticed that the configd cpu usage would spike up a percentage point or two every few seconds, hovering at zero the rest of the time. I don't believe it used to do that, and it doesn't happen on any of the other macs I've checked for this behavior. Since this machine is a laptop and I use it on battery all the time, if there's something needlessly going on in the background causing configd to write stuff to the system config all the time I'd like to stop it.

This is happening even when I'm not touching the trackpad or any keys.

Is it normal for configd to sometimes spike a little bit during periods of system inactivity? If not, are there any common things that would cause it to do so?

edit: The machine is:
Powerbook G4 12" 1.5 GHz (early 2005 model)
768 MB RAM
OS 10.4.3
No external devices hooked up when this happened.
