Connecting a Mac to an HDTV (settings?)

When hooking up my G4 to my 42" plasma, it will show the start up screen but as soon as it switches over to the desktop, the screen goes away and says "no support".

It is a settings issue. I can get my powerbook to show up just fine on the TV because it changes the settings automatically to 1920x1080. I cannot set my G4 to that setting.

How can I get the TV and G4 compatible?
 
What graphics card does the G4 have? It's possible that that resolution isn't supported.

You can try booting in Safe Mode by holding down the 'shift' key as the computer boots, which may then use a compatible resolution. If so, visit the Displays preference pane and set the resolution to the desired one.
