Connecting to the internet

Hi! I've recently bought an iMac G3 (233MHz) and i upgraded to OS X Panther. The thing is that i can't connect to the internet. I've set properly the configurations needed, but i can only surf in google. Also, when i try to update the software in the apple menu, it gets stuck and then it says that the time for response is too long.
Any suggestions??
Thanks.

iMac G3 (233MHz)
Mac OS X Panther, upgraded from OS 9.2
Connecitng through PPPoE

Sorry, but i don't get it.
The issue is that it is weird that i could only get to google and none of other pages, not even messenger, nor update software :S

Are you really getting Google, or are you loading pages from the cache. Try loading a page with the Alt key depressed. That should get you a fresh page.

If you have a broadband connection, PPPoE is wrong. Untick the box in the Network Prefs if this is the case.

If you're connecting with dialup, you DON'T select PPPoE. That's an option for DSL if it uses PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE). For dialup, its PPP.

Somehow it seems that you need to include the DNS nameservers for your ISP in the configuration for your Ethernet.

Hi, Thanks for reading this. I've a question, Did i say that i was using a DSL connection?? It seems i dont, so that's why i'm using PPPoE. Well, this may help to get more ideas
Thanks

 Why would you choose PPPoE if you don't use DSL? If normal dialup, then PPP is your correct setup. PPPoE is likely preventing your connection.

As DeltaMac mentioned and I before him, the option you need for regular dial-up is PPP, not PPPoE. PPPoE stands for PPP over Ethernet, and you don't use an Ethernet connection for dialup, you use a phone line. You need to just use PPP.

:S i understand what you are saying, but i'm trying to connect with built in ethernet, that's why i use PPPoE, and i get connection, but it seems is restricted, because i can only get to google. I use the same connection with a PC and i do whatever i want with it :P. So, the question is: Is a problem of settings or something else??

So then you must have DSL, not the traditional "dialup" connection. Yes, the DSL modem has to connect to the ISP but it's still not the same as analog dialup, which is using the modem built into a computer (usually).

Check in your Mac's ethernet settings and see if you're getting the DNS nameservers along with the IP address and other info from the router/modem. If the DNS nameservers aren't listed, then you're going to have to put them in manually (usually provided by your ISP).

I finally could connect to internet!! I bought a router and it worked!!. Later, i found out that google is always there, actually, even without connection, so is not a reference of being connected. I think it was an issue of DNS, because router identified those alone.
Well, thank you anyway!!:P
