connecting to various networks

At home my powerbook G4 is connected to the internet wirelessely. However, when I travel to other places providing wireless internet it cannot cannot. Sometines it detects the signal and actually is connected but when I open Internet explorer it says the server cannot be found, no matter the website, it just doesn't work. what do i do?

Barring lack of an IP address, it seems like a DNS problem. Do you have your DNS settings set manually? If so, this could be your problem as most hotspots provide everything (IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS) dynamically. Create a new location specifically for hotspots so you don't change your settings for your home network.
 
It's also possible that, for whatever reason, the wireless at the places you were traveling to was malfunctioning. I've stayed at probably five or six hotels that had wireless but didn't maintain it (i.e. the router crashed and nobody knew how to reset it). Also, some places require you to buy a card with a key on it that you need to enter into a website on their network before you can go online. Usually just opening a browser and navigating to any site will bring up the login for that, though.

Assuming that the network is functional, nixgeek's suggestion should do the trick. Make sure you've got DHCP enabled for your second network location.
