Connecting to XP from OSX Panther using FireWire.

Make sure you know your XP user name and password (if you have not got an XP password you will have to create one).

On XP goto "Control Panel" "Network Connections" select and then right click the "1394 Connection" and choose Properties.
Double Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and another window will appear.
Select "Use the Following IP Address" and set the IP Address to 192.168.0.2 and then select Submask and it will automatically be filled in (should be 255.255.255.0) and then select Ok.

On OSX select "System Preferences" Network and then select "Network Port Configurations" from the Show popup menu.
Then Select the New button and then Select Built-in FireWire (or PCI Firewire for a PCI FireWire card) from the Port popup menu and enter a name of your choice (eg FireWire XP) in the Name field to change it from the default name (Untitled) and then choose OK.
Make sure the name you used (eg FireWire XP) is checked and then goto the name you used (eg FireWire XP) from the Show popup menu.
In the TCP/IP page select Configure IPv4 Manually and enter 192.168.0.1 for the" IP Address" and 255.255.255.0 for the "Subnet Mask".

To connect to XP from OSX select Go and then "Connect to Server" from the main menu and enter
smb://192.168.0.2
and then Click on the Connect button.
You will then be asked for a user name and password.
Enter your XP user name and password and it should connect and confirm that XP's "Shared Documents" folder is to be shared (SharedDocs).
If you want to share your entire XP hard disk goto "My Computer" and select your hard disk then right click and choose "Sharing and Security" and check "Share this folder on the network" before connecting.

To disconnect drag the connection icon from the Desktop to the trash.
