Controlling New Finder Window

Is there a way to control how a new finder window opens? This has been driving me nuts for a long while. Often times when I open a new finder window by pressing apple-n, one opens but is half off of the screen. For a while the window was a very inconvenient size so it would slow me down.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I didn't see anything when I searched.

Well then double click on the Hard disk icon. When the Finder window opens drag it to where you want it to be and resize it. The close the window then try the command(apple)+n keys.

If it still doesn't hold please report back.
