Converting Divx to MPG (for vcd)

Would it be at all easy to convert a DivX movie to an MPG format that I could burn onto a CD in VCD format (with Toast)?

What would I use? Anybody have any info on this? Thanks!
 
There are two ways:

The first is to try either the codec from www.macdivx.com or www.divx.com. One of them has a "Avi2Mov" app. If they work with the DivX you have (pray for it), just drop the DivX into Toasts VideoCD converter and there you go. With the codec from macdivx.com, you have to run Avi2Mov first so that the MP3 audio is predecoded.

The other way is in OS 9. Install the DivXPlayer from www.macdivx.com and start it. Now choose "Doctor DivX" from the tools-menu and select the target DivX. After that (takes some time) choose "Predecode audio" from the same menu and use it on the newly created file (from DivX Doctor). If this is also finished, you should have a file called bla.mov.aiff. WHILE DIVX PLAYER IS STILL OPEN (INSTERT ELEVEN BLINKING "IMPORTANT" MARKS HERE) drop this new .mov.aiff file in the VideoCD converter from Toast.

These things work for me all the time, and I converted a few dozens of DIvXs to VideoCD already. The quality is - depending on which DivX codec was used - amazingly good for a VideoCD!!!
 
Well, I tried it and it worked... sort of.

I guess I didn't realize how long it takes to convert a long DivX movie to MPEG (like 5 or 6 hours for 90 minutes or so). Once it is converted, the quality has been taken down-- and the size of the movie has been reduced to about 320x240. In addition, it plays back kind of choppy on my Mac and in my DVD player.

Thanks for the tip, but it looks like for my use, this is way too much of a pain in the ass to see a movie on my TV. I guess until I can get myself a video card with s-video or composite out, I will have to settle for watching a smooth, good-quality DivX on my Mac.
 
VCDs have to have this resolution, but that doesn't explain the bad quality and the choppy playback! If I use the mentioned method (allthough I tend to create DVDs instead of VCDs since I have the Quicksilver), the quality is REALLY GOOD for a VCD.

I really don't understand why it seems to be so bad on your Mac...
 
I'm not sure why I'm getting choppy playback either. I will probably try again some time and mess around with some things to see if I can get better results.

For now, I can watch it on my screen. I've got a 17" monitor, which is only 2" smaller than my TV anyway. :)

...man, a superdrive would be really really nice. I just bought this G4 in August... it was an educational deal for a 533 graphite rather than the new Quicksilvers and at the time, it was a really great price. But now in January, it seems like this thing is "old"... now we're starting to see superdrives on iMacs!

It's hard to believe. My G4 was top of the line last year, a few months before I bought it.
