My System:
  • Powerbook G4
  • 256 MB of Memory
  • 1.5Ghz proc
  • 80GB hdd

Goal: Boot to Tiger install using HDD, no Dvd.

The hard drive is freshly formated and has no OS loaded on it.

I would like to be able to boot to my tiger install dvd, using Termina, copy all files from the dvd on to a folder on the formatted drive, make it bootable, then be able to boot up using the hard drive.

Which commands would I need to run while in the terminal window to accomplish this goal?

Based on 'Goal: Boot to Tiger install using HDD, no Dvd.' and dismissing all the remaining ('Terminal', plus) text.

Partition the internal hard disk drive, hdd, or an external FireWire drive into a minimum of two partitions. One partition - for a bootable MacOS X (10.4.x) installation, and the second partition (about 2.5 GB in size) - for a copy of the 'Tiger Install' DVD.

On the second partition - install the 'Tiger Install' DVD contents using 'Carbon Copy Clone'.

To install 'Tiger' from the second partition (for example - onto the first partition) - reboot the Mac with the '<option>' key pressed, select the second 'Tiger Install' partition - from the list of bootable volumes, and continue.

Thanks for the reply.

I appreciate the solution above, but currently have no usable OS installed. I am limited to the preinstall terminal, disk manager, and system startup disk. With that in mind I will not be able to use the carboncopier you listed.

The issue I have is similar to what is going on in thread (http://www.macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=268142&highlight=firmware) only I don't have the restore cd in order to install the previous Mac os version and get the firmware update installed.

My plan is to be able to boot to the hdd (tiger dvd files on hdd), pop in a cd with the firmware update on it, and some how upgrade the firmware using terminal.

Your machine doesn't need a Firmware upgrade. Just boot from the Tiger disc and install.

I am getting an error noting this software can not being installed on this system, or something along this effect.

Based on the apples page I was told that I should have upgraded the firmware before attempting this install.

THIS is Apple's available Firmware updates page.

Your machine doesn't require an update.

Is your Tiger DVD a retail copy, or from another machine?

Certainly SOUNDS like it's from another machine, so no retail copy. Since that'd make your try illegal, we can't help you.

No this is a retail version I purchased and can show you the two dvd's it came on if needed. Believe me after this ordeal with a purchased version of an OS that is supposed to work with my system I wouldn't even venture to imagine what you would have to do get a pirated version to fly.

Here are the two listings that make me think otherwise on the updates.

PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) PowerBook Firmware Update 4.2.9 120092
PowerBook G4 PowerBook Firmware Update 4.1.8 75132

There are soo many G4's listed that I don't which to go by. By the way this is a 17in screen.

Tiger only comes on one DVD.

PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) - 550 0r 667MHZ machine

PowerBook G4 - 400 or 500 MHZ machine

neither of these is what you have. As I said, your machine doesn't need a Firmware update.

if you have the retail version of Tiger, the black DVD with the silver X on it, it could be a bad disc.

Where did you buy the Tiger disc?

Once you have resolved the need to install Firmware or not; and, that you are installing via a 'retail' copy of 'Tiger' ...

... boot from the 'retail' 'Tiger Install' DVD, open (launch, run) 'Disk Utility' and (again) partition the hard disk drive, into two partitions (making the second partition between 2.5 and 3.0 GB). Install MacOS X (via the 'Tiger Install' DVD) onto the larger partition.
Once the installation process is completed and you have created an account or accounts - download 'Carbon Copy Cloner', and then perform the steps outlined in my first reply.
