Copying a DVD movie

I tried to copy a DVD movie (single layer) using my new iMac (not even two weeks old) using Toast 5.1 under Jaguar. The movie finished copying, only on playback in both my iMac and on two other DVD players the sound was jumpy and the picture was all pixelated. What went wrong? Do I need to update to Toast 5.2 before I try again (Jaguar support) or was it the DVD's MacroVision that stopped me copying correctly. If this is the case, is there any software available that disables MacroVision? Thanks.

Was this a dvd movie you made or purchased at the store?

Did you do a direct CD Copy or did you highlight files and drop them into the CD?

Hey I have a similar request, I make movies from video and build DVDs from this media, but would like to make copies from those DVDs rather than clutering up my hard disk with *.mov files - proviso without buying Toast for the third time.

It is just for backup. Some of my DVDs I feel are going to be ruined soon (eg. when my dad lends them to friends and they don't exactly come back in the same condition). I simply chose Copy in Toast and thats how I attempted to copy it. What went wrong? Plus this was just a test to prove to my dad that the Superdrive copied Dolby Digital and other soundtracks and to prove that the Superdrive was well work getting. Anybody have any ideas what went wrong?

i'm really surprised it worked at all. DVD movies are roughtly 6-8 gigs apiece, and most DVD-R media are 4.7 gigs. copying a DVD is a fuzzy process, it's much easier to rip it, but then it's not watchable on a dvd player.

speaking of which-- can you make a really huge mpeg2 file and burn it as VCD ona 4.7 gig DVD? that'd be kickin' tyte.

The movie I copied was no a single-layered DVD disc (max 4.7GB) so there was enough room, although most DVDs out now are on dual-layered discs. Without sacrificing the Dolby Digital/dts soundtrack is there a way to lower the picture quality perhaps and drop any unnecessary soundtracks so that you could fit a larger DVD onto a 4.7GB disc?

I wanna copy DVD's too. I have a PowerBook and if i travel i wanna take DVD's with me but i feel i might not be as careful with them. (cd's dont do well with me either, that's why i have iPod). So if i made a copy, then ruined the copy DVD it'd be all good because the actual Twister DVD would be safely at home.

So is it possible?

If you got the money to spend for your new business I recommed DVD Studio Pro from Apple for $1000 if it doesn't do what you want get a refund!!! http://www.apple.com/dvdstudiopro/

For the tighter wallet $40-70

and for $290

I'll keep looking for other Mac alternatives.

I was able to make copies of my iDVD made DVD's using disc copy.

Just use the Make image from device, select the dvd drive, and then tell it the image is a CD/DVD master and give it a name. Then you can use Disc copy's Burn Image function to make discs out of it.
