you need to start with the basics: 1 photo manipulation course (Photoshop), 1 vector art course (Illustrator), and 1 page layout course (InDesign or Quark--but I suggest InDesign if you're just starting out). Learn those and you'll have a great foundation to build upon. You can then get into prepress, web design, animation, coding, etc. It's a long road.
 
Interning somewhere or getting an entry level prepress job could get you started too as long as you know the basics about the apps (I did when I started out 11 years ago).
