Creating a Mac OS X Raid.

Hi, I have 2 external USB 2.0 drives from Maxtor. I have created through the Disk Utility Interface a 'Mirrored Raid Set'. The 2 drives are connected to the MacBookPro through a USB 2.0 HUB. They are not connected betwen each other at all.

My understanding and intention behind this set-up was to ensure that at any point in time, if any of the 2 HDs dailed, I could alays retrive the information from the other one seemlesly.

I noticed that if I turn one of the drives off, they are actually NOT in synch, as a matter of fact, eventhough they show as one drive when mounted, only one of them has information, while the other has a few files or folders, but nohting else.

Questions:
(1) Are my expectations not realistic for what the OSx can do with the Raid funtionality?
(2) Is there anything wrong in the set-up that I have?
(3) Is this not a good idea at all? What other suggestions do you have for having data replicated?
(4) Can I make a Raid via hardware at a resaonble price?

Thanks a lot. Martin.
