Recycle Me!
Hey all... problem... Ok so whenever I try to read this CD my roommate burned on his PC, I get the attached error messages. It's just some .mpg's and .mp3's, yet for some reason I can't read the disk... This happens in OS9 as well. So I'm at a loss... Any suggestions?

my first advice is to run a diagnostic and repair program on your system disc. start with disk first aid/disk utility and fsck -y then work your way up to the third party ones. recognition is often a matter of screwed up directories/volume structures.

there is a program that probably isn't the cure for current problem but might help you in other ways. click here to check it out

will that program work in OS X?

also, will fsck run any differently if it's run through the consol as opposed to if i logout and then log back in holding command-s or whatever it is that gets me direct consol access?

Thanks!

i don't think it would help with osx, not sure. but you mentioned 9 so i figured you were more worried about accomplishing the task than native purity. it would be interesting to see if it worked with classic running though. (i haven't installed it yet so i don't know more. i just read the description and reviews - i may need it when we start getting our photos put on disc which my gf has just started to accept the idea of)

someone with more linux knowledge will have to answer questions concerning fsck. i am just getting to feel comfortable doing it the straightforward way myself.

one other thought - your roommate may not be a burn master and there are certainly better ways than others to burn discs that will be compatible across platforms.

oh yeah i mean, i'm definetly mostly interested in just getting the damn thing to mount on my comp... fsck didn't seem to do anything, said everything was fine... is there anything i can get my roommate to do to make it work better? (at all?)

well, i'm about to try the ISO session idea now... if not i'll just kick him off his comp and burn it myself, because i doubt he has much idea of what is going on... Hopefully, something will work out. As for the age of the computer i doubt that would be an issue... my copmuter is fairly new, and also, his burner is only 4x, so i doubt the speed would matter. Thanks guys!

I used to transfer files all the time between my pc and mac using cds. I found out that burning a cd as an ISO format worked best. some other variations tend to give the error that you encountered, especially if it's an image and not a project that you created and specified as an ISO.

So advise given here in this thread is correct and that you should create a ISO9660 disc and try to stay away from cdrom-xa and other multi-track formats (not to say they will not work, but they can cause problems in certain scenerios).

I since then have stopped burning cds and just tranfer files via ftp between the two now that ftp is builtin to OS X:p .
