Hey, I'm trying to run a windows based chat client on my mac and after searching google for things like virtual pc found Darwine. I wondered if anyone has tried it before? and how likely is it to run the program I'm trying to use or is it mostly just luck of the draw like wine on linux.

Thanks for any advice.

BTW what was the chat client you wanted to run? Most if not all chat protocols are supported with Mac-native software.

It's an old excite virtual places type chat client www.vpchat.com. They actually recommend virtual pc I was just hoping to find something for free that would run it.

There's bochs which is free. Don't bother with it though as performance is horrible. Go with Virtual PC. You'll be much happier.

The key word here is free and you are out of luck unless you are willing to accept performance levels too slow to be usable. If using this chat client is a big item with you, you can probably pick up a used PC for less than you would pay for Virtual PC and you will get much better performance. Emulators such as VPC are by their very nature slow. On the average it takes anywhere from four to a dozen machine instructions on the host (your Mac) for every instruction on the emulated machine (a Pentium).
