Hello, I am desperate for help. I have a mac pro 8-core 2.8, about a year and a half old. I was running OSX and Bootcamp XP. There were two problems and I dont know if they are related.
BACKGROUND:
1st, a while after installing xp (SP3! - big mistake apparently) it refused to boot into osx - it just hung every time on a blue screen after the apple logo. However it would still boot in XP. OSX would not let me boot from installation disks EVEN when I removed the hard drive so the installation disk was its only option - it still hung.
Then after a while (I was using it for work projects and had no oportunity to fix it) whilst booting windows it would simply switch off mid boot. This continued for a few goes - eventually booted, ran for a day then switched off of its own accord.
Finally it will now no longer even boot to the chime. You switch it on and it switches off 2 secs later.
QUESTION:
This may be a damaged logic board which is 700 GBP to replace!!! Or it could be a Processesor which is cheaper as its a single component. Is it worth only replacing the Processor if thats the problem? Or is it likely to fail again down the line as something has already made it fail once?
Also do you think the two problems above are related?
Many many many thanks for any advice - I use this computer to make a living and cant afford another whole machine at the moment
