Decoding attachments in Mail

I've noticed recently that Mail is having problems decoding attachments I receive. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to the problem (it's happened on different types of files sent from different users to different accounts but all on the same copy of Mail). It is definitely happening more and more, however. Is there something in particular I could check / re-build / re-install? It's becoming a bit of a business issue as client's are getting frustrated with sending me attachments (never a good thing!).

Any help would be appreciated...

Perhaps you could try reinstalling Mail.app itself. You might try using pacifist (avail. from versiontracker.com) on the packages on the OS X install CDs.

Can you at least save the attachments to disk and open them from there?

No, I can't save the attachments to the Disk. All I get are text error messages like:

-Oops, I couldn't decode type "multipart/appledouble"

(Which software update package would have Mail.app in it?)

somewhere in each .pkg file is a file whose name ends in .bom (stands for bill of materials, I think).

lsbom thefile.bom | grep Mail.app

should find it if it's in there...
