defragmenting / fscking zip disks?

Sogni

*gone*
I found an old zip disk I'm trying to take data off of it. All the files transfered over but one, complaining about not being able to read/write.

I tried running fsck but got the following error:

** untitled (NO WRITE)
BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
ioctl (GCINFO): Inappropriate ioctl for device
fsck: untitled: can't read disk label

Any ideas?
I don't have Norton System Works (well, I do under OS9 but want to try what I can is OSX before I try that route).

Thanks for any help...

just be glad it was only one file!! it is common for zip disks to get a bad block or 2 over time. the only real answer is to get all you can and low level reformat the disk. this will skip the block and use one of those spares that make a 100 disk a 94-96 in reality.

to my knowledge, no utilities really work with zip disks.

at least that's my expereince. that's why any files you really need should exist on at least 2 zips as backup.

You may want to try alsoft diskwarrior in OS9, i dont know whether it supports Zip drives, but there is a good chance it does. And if the data is recoverable at all, it will recover whatever is useable.
