Deleting a user account?

Sure, Trip. 
Since System Prefs wouldn't delete the accounts, I looked for alternate solutions. I found NetInfo Manager under the Utilities folder, and opened it. I clicked the lock, entered my password, and I was ready. Then I scrolled to the "users" directory, selected the accounts I needed to delete one by one, and hit the Delete button in the toolbar. Done.
Pretty easy...
