deletion of "rtf" file

I have a file called acknowledgements.rtf from some where but when i go to delete it , I get a cannot delete owned by root message any ideas

Open the "Show Info" box on the file, and select the Ownership & Permissions drop down.

If the Owner and Group boxes are grayed out, you can unlock these by clicking the little padlock button and entering an administrator password.

Then, set the owner to your username. It will have a little '(me)' next to it.

Then, you will have the authority to delete the file.
