Just dropped about 370mb of photos onto the desktop instead of iphoto, now desktop has stopped working - I cant highlight anything or open anything in the bar at the top, how can I sort this out?

Have you restarted yet? First, try that.

If you have another Mac, you can boot your mac with the problem desktop into firewire mode (at startup, press apple-t), this will make it act like a harddrive. Then, connect a firewire wire between the problem mac and the working mac, the harddrive of the mac in firewire mode will be on your desktop. Navigate that harddrive to your user folder, then your desktop folder, and delete or move the problem files.

If you don't have another mac, you can try to delete the files as root. Go to netinfo manager, and click on the "security" menu in Netinfo Manager. Click "enable root user". Fill out a password, log out, then log in as root. Find your user folder in the root account, then click on the desktop folder. Delete or move the problem file.

Hopefully, one of those fixes will work.
