Desktop icons disappear or flash when clicked

I have one of the new imacs, OS version 10.4.11

When I log off, and then back on. None of my desktop icons work, ie. my Mac HD appears on my desktop but when i click on it, all the icons on my desktop disappear then reappear. same if i click on a folder on my desktop.

If I turn my machine off and on, the problem is resolved, however my machine needs to back up at some point so I need it to be able to log off rather than turn off.

Is there a patch that can sort this? or any suggestions?

Does this occur also when you go to sleep and wake the system?
Do you have fast user switching enabled? What happens if another user is logged in the same time?
Is it on your private Mac? = if you put the screensaver on with password, would this bypass the problem when relogging to the user account?
When this happens, look what Console says. It should report what's causing it...

it doesnt happen when the mac sleeps and wakes back up.

Its a company Mac

I dont believe I have fast user enabled.

Screensaver doesnt make any difference.

How do I find Console?
