Desktop organization

Undoubtedly this is a rookie question, but I haven't figured out how to stabilize the icons on my desktop. It seems they love to rearrange themselves, and often open on top of existing icons...sometimes many layers deep.

How do I make the icons remain organized as I want them to? Sometimes it takes a major effort to find anything, like the iPod icon.

Thanks for the help,

Pish

You could create an Apple script that rearranges them at boot time, or you could also use one of the Arrange options under the View menu. This doesn't fix the underlying problem of why they are moving though...

click on the desktop and go show view options - now the icon's won't organize themself at all, you have to do it by hand.

Choose Show View Options from the View menu then check the Snap to grid checkbox. Close the window. Now move the icons where you want them. You will no longer have the problem of icon layers.
