Desktop preferences won't hold ... need help

I've been having a problem with my desktop holding display preferences. I'm running OS X.1.5, using 2 displays (17" Studio and 13"). I set the larger display as my primary. Therefore, in preferences srceen, Arrange tab, I position the menu bar on 17" and move smaller screen on the left to reflect its working location, before closing screen.

I learned that others have had similar problems with preferences holding, but these had to do with the organization of files (whether it be maintaining Column or some other format/view).

Apparenting information from Apple's knowledge center suggest that the DS_Store file has been corrupted and the fix is to delete file and re-establish preferences.

I have done this and while it seems to have repaired the viewing of files (now holds Col. view), it has done nothing to solve my display (and Login screen) problem. Yes, I forgot to mention that Login screen also shows up on the wrong display.

Anyone familiar with this problem? Offer any solutions?

Haven't seen this type of problem, but you may have some corruption in your user settings. Try creating a new user. Log-in as that user, set-up your monitors to your liking. Logout, then log back in. If settings hold for that test user. then your settings in your main user are corrupted in some way. One problem with troubleshooting settings and preferences with OS X.: The pref file names do not always give you a clue about what settings or prefs are set with that file
