Did something bad...

Dark Archon
I think i did something bad, maybe someone can help. I was trying to kill this program (shareware) that keeps alerting me that i need to obtain the liscence, i tried to delete the software and everything related, but the notices kept coming. i localized the process and deleted the file (a framework file i think). Now, when i restart it goes to a fullscreen Darwin/BSD console. I can login to the various accounts and do whatever, but cant get to the login window or GUI. Help Please!

Bad Bad Bad Boy! ;)
No, I am kidding. Could have happened to anyone in this forum. Before you delete something, come here and post your prob and ppl will tell you if you can just delete it or not.
Beside reinstalling, I would try to repair all permissions. Just in case..
And if you deleted a certain file, do you still remember which one it was and where it was located?
Last but not least: which os are we actually talking about?

Last: welcome to the forum :)

I WAS running Panther on a G3 Pismo PB Firewire, but I bought it from someone and didnt get the Panther disc, so I had to downgrade to Jaguar (which I have the disc for!). I'll remember this for next time, definitly!

The file i deleted was a framework file for a networking shareware program called DAVE (for networking with windows machines--I know, I know, OS X is SUPPOSED to integrate perfectly w/ Windows networks, but it doesnt, XP cannot see Mac's for some reason! ). The file was located in the trash. I even tried to locate the trash to move it back when I was in the fullscreen console mode (which was eerily reminiscent of DOS ::evil:: , what can I say, my generation is GUI born!)but couldnt find the file. One thing is for sure, this has definitly shown me that I want to become more familiar with the inner workings of UNIX/LINUX/OS X!
Thanks for the help!

So, the trash is not emptied yet? Sounds good. You can find the trash this way:
1. setup a superuser password: 'sudo -s' and now define a password (don't forget this one! ;))
2. cd Users/yourusername/.Trash
3. et voila. Now you should know where to move that file (hope you recall where you deleted it ;))

Good luck!

Thanks for the help, ill have to remember that. In the mean time, I downgraded to jaguar, Ill shell out the dough for the up grade a little later down the line (when i get some spare clams, and when the bugs are worked out of the latest iteration). I have started to look at this site more often in the past few days, hmmm, I hope it isnt habit forming...

Habit forming? Nah...

It is only minorly addictive. there are self-help groups that can assist in getting you back to a normal life, if you want.
