Digital camera Recommendations

Looking for recommendations for a digital camera under $500.00. Replaceing a Kodak DX3600.

Thanks

I am going for Sony DSC P8. Costs something more than 280Euro here. I was more interested to digis under 300Euro. Another option would be the Canon A70...

I was debating between the Canon S400 and the Olympus C-50.

I ended up getting the C-50, and have been very happy since. :->

Hey all... First the following are opinions - read www.dpreview.com - this is the single most reliable and unbiased digital camera review site out there.

I'm an amateur photographer who's been digital for about 4 years now. I have a Canon D60 SLR which is probably not what your looking for.... however, Canon really "owns" the digital market - they've simply left all the competition in their wake from sensors to onboard image processing speeds etc. Their 6.2MP CMOS sensor has become the industry leader in its class. I would highly recommend one of their G series cameras - you should be able to get one for approx $400 from B&H photo.

I've played with numerous Nikons, Sonys, Canons, Minoltas, and even Olympus products but have found the the Canon S and G series are the best all around "party" cameras. We made the mistake of buying a Nikon 5000 for use in our clinic - thing sucks and cost us $1000. If you want to spend a few extra $$ canon just introduced a <$1000 digital SLR. I would avoid Sony and Olympus because they both use slow nonstandard memory products. CF cards are dirt cheap now and pushing 4GB. - john.

Steves-Digicams is a very good site for reviews and info.

After sleeping on it, I'm trying now to cancel my order for the FujiFilm 3800. I'm going to get the Canon S230. Half the size and weight, and that's an important feature for me. I'm not a professional, and the specs are as good as my Kodak, and that takes great pics, and the print quality is alo great.

You won't be disappointed. The S230 is the same as the Ixus (I got mine in Singapore, hence the different name from the model sold in the US).
I would recommend getting a bigger memory card as well, especially if you're going to take the photos in high-quality format.
And if you don't have one, a card reader works well and they're inexpensive. I found that I rather drop the photos to my hard drive via the card reader, touch them up a little and crop the way I want in PhotoShop, then import into iPhoto.

Bob - If you can get the OS X programs disk from Cannon sales there is a great program on the disk called PhotoStitch. IMHO it was well worth the US $19.00 I paid for the upgrade disk

Just got the Cannon S50 (5MP) from beachcamere.com for $399. It great, I like the fact that it is small and so far I am happy with the pictures it takes and it has a lot of features.

I have the Toshiba PDR-4300. It's a 4.3 MP camera with a 2.8x Canon Optical zoom lens, 2x digital zoom, fully automatic or fully manual mode, all for under $300 - I'm very happy with it.

Whatever you get, get a larger flash card. You won't regret it.

I can tell you the Canon IXUS 400 is amazing. I bought this beautiful camera and I am not disappointed in the slightest. This camera is awsome!

Well, slept on it again and ordered the Fujifilm Finepix 3800. Buy.com has it for $209.00 after rebate. Consumer Reports list it as the best 3 Megapixel camera they tested. Price won out.
