DIMM slots and ram upgrades

I know that I have two DIMM slots in my G3 400mhz. The machine shipped with 128MB of ram. and I'm eager to improve my OS X functioning with some memory upgrades. I want to max it out at 512MB.

here's the question. Is this 128MB part of the machine or does this take up a DIMM slot? In other words should I get two 256 boards (and remove the 128?) or should I get one 128 and one 256?

I always thought the 128MB of ram was somehow part of the internal machine, but I just checked out the system profiler and it looks like it occupies a DIMM slot.

according the apple history link you provided:

RAM Type: PC100
Minimum RAM Speed: 100 MHz
Onboard RAM: 0 MB
RAM Slots: 2
Maximum RAM: 1 GB

I'm assuming that Onboard ram = 0MB, means that the 128 MB it shipped with is taking up one of my DIMM slots. (that would stink)

can anyone confirm this?

But this also says I can max out at 1GB. From my perusal of the online apple documentation (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43099), I had thought my max was 512MB.

Thanks in advance

There may be a ROM block or something preventing the use of more than 512mb of ram, who knows.

Anyone here have one of these machines that has a 512 chip and another of any size? I saw a G3 450 used on powermax that claimed 576mb.

Buy a 512mb chip. It's cheaper than buying 2 256mb chips. So pop it in and see if it runs with the current 128mb chip left in. If it does, congrats you now have 640mb of ram. If not you'll at least have 512mb of ram.

I am having trouble confirming the max ram capacity. here's another source that says 512MB http://www.lowendmac.com/imacs/dvse.shtml

and of course, the store that I am going to buy from said my max is 1GB.

If the max is 512MB, and I install a 512MB board, I think I will only get 256MB out of it. not 384 as you suggest. well that's what the apple doc says, under notes. see: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58007

has anyone tried this with this particular machine?
1999 iMac (slot loading) 400mhz DV SE Graphite

thanks

yes. all the ram sellers say I can max it at 1GB.

someone on another forum said the apple docs are wrong. notice how it says max ram is 512K and then further down it says it will take 512MB cards, but it would only be able to accept a 512MB card if it has a max capacity of 1GB. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43099

I think I'm going to try the 512MB card because at the store I'm shopping at, I can get full credit if it doesn't work. www.DataMem.com

When it arrives, I'll let you know what happens.

wahoooO!! I loaded the 512 MB card. all systems go! Apple profiler recognizes it and the machine is running very smoooth now.

the 1999 iMac 400mhz DV/SE can take the 512 MB card!
