Directory problems - Techtool Pro 4.0.1

Hi,

I have been running OSX 10.4.11 on a 600 MHz dark blue bubblegum coloured iMac (I think from circa 2000/1). I ran directory maintenance using Techtool 4.0.1 on my hard drive (40GB), plus a partitioned external hard drive (100GB/400GB) to optimize the directories. Unfortunately the version of Techtool Pro I was using was not tested for use with OSX 10.4.11. A list of changes was presented for each drive with the changes marked in green as being favourable, which I accepted. on all three. I finished using the program and shut down, only to find that neither the computer, nor the external hard drive would boot, nor even mount when booting up from another disk. The only drive I now have working is an eDrive (created using Techtool) which I think is a RAM based system that is only capable of running with Techtool open at the same time. It will not update using the update facility from within the program.

When running a disk utility I am told "invalid B-tree node size. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." I have checked similar problems on the Micromat forum and found that other people have had the same problem. Their reply to the situation is: "You used a version of TechTool Pro that predates the introduction of the Extended Attributes file in Tiger, which has been irreparably damaged. While that sounds bad, the Extended Attributes file is not doing much as of yet. Unfortunately, the system software treats it as if it were as important as the Catalog B-Tree and Extents B-Tree parts of the disk directory, and will not mount the volume".

Is there anything I can do to retrieve the directory or at this point do I have to resort to data recovery to retrieve what I can? From what I can gather, there are no hardware issues related to this problem. I would be most grateful for any suggestions you can make as a first priority, retrieving or rebuilding the directory, and as a last resort, the best way to recover my data from the 2 drives. Many thanks.

Katherine
