Disc drive fails to recognise CDs/discs

I have an emac running 10.39, and have been experiencing problems when I insert discs (CDs or otherwise), drive just fails to recognise them at all. Have tried several different discs to no avail.

I can still burn the odd blank disc using itunes, but this is very inconsistent, sometimes works, sometimes not.

I have checked in finder and system is set to show discs on desktop, but does not.

What checks should I run please? Maybe a hardware fault (kids always messing around with the tray).

Your computer should have come with a disc called Apple Hardware Test. This might help diagnose.

My disc drive had similar problems, but was under the 1 year manufacturers warranty, so it was free fix. But I bet your eMac is older than 1 year.

You might also try resetting your PRAM, as that deals with hardware stuff.

I was told by my office's tech support that it is healthy to do this once a month.

Hi, I have a similar disc drive problem. I insert things like audio discs and my pc recognizes them, but when I insert a video game disc, my pc doesn't recognize it at all. I'm not a very techy person, so please try to keep things simple. I have a Maxtor 6X080L0 drive, and i have a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4320B DVD/RW Drive. I believe I have a Gateway pc if that matters... Please help!
