Disk activity after boot up

I have noticed that after I start my MAC each day there is a period of high disk activity after I get to the desktop. For about 30 seconds after the desktop appears I can hear the HD churning away, and trying to do anything with the compter in that time is very slow. Once the HD stops its activity the computer runs fine and is very speedy.

What is OSX doing right after boot up that takes up so much hard drive time?


OSX 10.1.4
G4 400 AGP
512MB RAM
40 GB IBM GXP 60 (main Drive)
20 GB Maxtor

This happens to me, too. I think it's a bug where system daemons are starting up that hog too much CPU.

Hopefully it'll be fixed in 10.2, but as far as I know, all we can do for now is wait.
 
Y'all didn't hear? After years of Windows trying to imitate the Mac, well, the roles have been reversed. Apparently the Mac wants to be more Windows-like now... hehe... ;)
 
My dad's G4 does this, and I can't actually tell if there is anythying going on on my LCD iMac since the drive is so goddamn quiet that you can't hear it at all 90% of the time...
