I'm trying to create an image of my home folder by dragging it to the Disk Copy window, but it always stops halfway through with an internal error of 999. Anybody know what's goin' on?

Where is the img file located? It sounds to me like this file is located in your Home directory which what you are trying to copy ...

Move this disk image file to another location and then try moving your home directory to it.
I would also check out some backup apps. You really only need to backup the files you have added to this directory, like documents, pics, and mp3's and the Library folder under your Home directory if you wish to restore some settings after a crash.
