Disk Repair

Hi

I tried to verify my harddrive, using disk utility. It's been rather slow lately. The verification didn't succeed as it said: "The underlying task reported failure on exit" The drive needed repair, but because of the failure I was not able to use the "repair disc" button.

Does anyone know how I repair my harddrive, and how do I find out what is wrong?

It's a iMac5,1
Intel Core 2 Duo
2.16 GHz
2 GB ram
Mac OS X 10.4.11

regards,
Mette

Are you booting from an alternate media (i.e., the Mac OS X Install/Restore CD/DVD) when you are trying to perform a repair on your hard drive?

Your hard drive cannot be adequately verified or repaired if you are booted from it. If you are not booting from the Mac OS X Install/Restore CD/DVD and performing the verify/repair, do so, and see if that helps.

I find that the most effective disk repair the to run File System Check from the command line in Single User Mode:
  1. Restart.
  2. Press [cmd]+[s] while booting-up.
  3. Wait until your computer completes booting fullscreen into commandline mode.
  4. At the command prompt, type "fsck -fy" [without the quotes].
  5. File System Check takes a few minutes. Be patient.
  6. If repairs were made, then repeat the command until the system indicates that none were necessary.
  7. If no repairs were made, then type "exit" [without the quotes].
It will take a couple of minutes to boot into the Mac GUI.
