I was using BRU with a tape drive, but it died. Now we want to use drobo to backup 8 macs and 1 server instead of tape. We will swap out drobo monthly for offsite. Is there a simple disk to disk backup solution that also works over the network on the mac side. BRU and Retrospect have you create librarys and staging disks which are impractical for the backup administrator. Any suggestions welcome.

Depends. On the Mac side if you clone to an external OS X will boot from that external. Something I use at home is the free Carbon copy Cloner. Other mac users like the shareware SuperDuper. However for backing up to network drives I would look at CronoSync.
Warning: I don't use a NAS unless you count a TimeCapsule. If you decide to use only Time Machine remember to have the backup mounted before the backup starts. Just remember you need to hang on the OS X install disk if you want to have a bootable backup. Plus with the Time Capsule i discovered it is better to connect directly the first vary large backup. Then after that I could use only wireless backups with no problem. However some users over time have said Time Machine on NAS devices is spotty at best so I would shy away from Time Machine in a work environment. Whatever you decide just make sure the backup designation is Mac OS X formatted even if you are backing up to a NAS, especially if you want OS X to boot from it (hold down the N key for network booting).
